What to Wear for a Branding Photoshoot: A Photographer’s Guide
What to Wear for a Branding Photoshoot: A Photographer’s Guide
Photographers often feel uneasy to tell their clients what to wear during the photoshoot, but this is a really important advice and clothes play a key part in a branding or a lifestyle photoshoot. The clothes are very important piece of the entire story, they tell a story.
When someone starts to build a brand, the first thing that they want to do is create a logo. During this stage, they decide on the colours, the font, and the shape of the logo. They then go on to build a website, and they employ the same techniques. They put a lot of effort when it comes to building a brand. So, why should it be different when choosing an outfit for the branding photoshoot?
Your photographs should reflect who you are, what you stand for, and how you define yourself. People often connect with people that share similar characteristics. At this stage, it is important to think who your ideal clients are and how you would like them to perceive you.
So, how might the outfit impact the photoshoot and what should you wear during a branding or lifestyle photoshoot?
Brand message
Ideally, the first thing to consider is the brand message. What do you want to convey to people through your images? Are you someone who prefers natural, earthy tones, or would you say you are flamboyant? What does your workplace look like? Do you work from the comfort of your own home or do you work in an office?
If you are someone who works in an office, such as a solicitor or an accountant, then I might suggest wearing a professional suit, but with a touch of personality. For instance, not everyone likes to wear dark corporate suits and some people want to express their feminine or masculine energy through their outfits. If you are someone who is not afraid to show their true, energetic personality, I would suggest wearing a different colour suit. Every individual has a different personality, so one advice does not fit all, but this is something that we discuss in advance of the photoshoot.
Colour palette
Colour gives character to the photographs. This is why it is important to select two or three colours for your outfit. Depending on the package you choose, you can also change more than one outfit during the photoshoot. The colours that you select for the outfit should complement your brand palette, as well as your skin complexion.
I would highly advise you to avoid patterns, neon colours, or logos (unless you wear your brand uniform with your own logo on it).
Dress for the setting and purpose
Think about the location of your photoshoot. Is it indoors or outdoors? What would the weather be like on the day? Also, think about where you would share your photographs. Would you add them on your website, is it for a magazine, or is it just for a social media marketing?
As your photographer, I will discuss these things with you prior to the photoshoot. I will be there to guide you from the very beginning until the day of the photoshoot. Together, we will come up with ideas regarding your outfit that will most brilliantly complement your personality, your style, and your brand.
Prioritise fit and comfort
My aim is for you to feel comfortable and confident throughout the entire photoshoot. However, if you are wearing tight clothes, or clothes that you are simply not comfortable with, you will not be able to enjoy the whole photoshoot experience and quite frankly, your attention will be focused on the clothes that you wear, which can affect your confidence. I advise my clients to carefully select what they are going to wear on the day of the photoshoot, bearing in mind the location, the temperature, the outfit colours, and most importantly, the material of the clothes. We all know the feeling when the clothes are just way too itchy on our skin or clothes that leave visible sweat patches. When you feel great in the outfit that you wear, you will be able to focus on the photoshoot, smile, and feel natural.
Paying careful attention to the small details
It is so easy to forget on the small details, but those small details often make a huge statement. If you are wearing a shirt, please remember to iron it before the photoshoot. If you are wearing socks, please remember to match the colour of the socks to the colour of the shoes. I regularly see people wearing white socks with black trainers, or vice versa, and that is a big no. If you are wearing a jewelry, please keep it to a minimal and wear jewelry that complements your look (unless, of course, you are promoting a jewelry brand). If you are wearing a nail polish, please ensure that you do not have any chipped nails or chipped nail polish on your nails.
You are making a huge investment in your business and your confidence. If you are unsure what to wear on the day of the photoshoot, please do not worry about it. The last thing you should be doing is worrying about your outfit. I am here to help you and to guide you, and we will go through this guide in depth in advance of the photoshoot, so that you will have plenty of time to prepare. Together, we will create photographs that truly represent you, your personality, and your brand.
